Airbus: AI co-pilot

Seconds matter when there is an issue flying. I know this because I watched Sully land on the Hudson on an icy cold day in 2009. We led research to determine how AI can be the difference between life or death.

  • Pilots have complex decisions to make in seconds. If there is an issue and they need to defer, they must calculate everything from wind speed, to passports of all onboard and remaining fuel.

They need to see why recommendations are being made, and have the ability to override certain factors without much cognitive load.

Once research was complete, it was critical that I provide all experience guidelines, all research, and all decisions made to finalize the build and launch of this product.

  • Partnership with Airbus, pilots, product, experience, research, and IBM Watson.

Research was conducted in simulators with pilots giving real-time feedback so that we could make quick iterations and fixes.
